✝ First Impressions. ▶ SUMMARY: One of the five main characters of Madoka Magica. Like all the other girls, Kyouko is tasked with destroying "living curses" known as Witches. In later canon, this threat is instead changed to wraiths, looming, ghost-like creatures who spread despair and grief. To help her in this task, Kyouko is granted a magical item called a Soul Gem, which allows her to transform into a magical girl. This gem is actually a physical representation of her soul. Similar to the other jaded veteran magical girls (Homura and Mami), Kyouko's world-weary pragmatism and occasional cruelty are spawned from a lifetime pockmarked with grief and despair, which have served to erode her faith in the world. As a result of the well-meaning but misguided wish that was granted to her in exchange for signing her magical girl contract (and effectively signing away her soul), her father, a priest, was driven to insanity. He killed her mother and sister, set his church on fire, and ultimately committed suicide. Kyouko then resolved to never use her powers for others, and adopted a selfish and self-serving philosophy. Initially cruel, brusque and callous, it is through Sayaka Miki that she begins to believe in the powers of good again. Kyouko has a compulsive eating habit, a result of (presumed months and maybe longer), of being without any substantial food. She will almost always be seen eating, even in a battle. ▶ VISUAL: Tiny! She's about 5'1" or 5'2" at the most, and is fairly scrawny all-around, though she's pretty long-legged as compared to the others. Bright red eyes and long, long red hair that she has in a ponytail most of the time, held in place by a black bow. Her top two canine teeth are pretty pointy, this is mainly a stylistic choice to make her fit the part of her punk character design. Age-wise, I normally peg her between the ages of 14 and 15 (fifteen more often than not). Favors hoodies and shorts/jeans in civilian wear. Boots too. Sometimes wears skirts. Almost always guaranteed to look like a little punk. On one ring finger, she has a red, teardrop shaped marking on her finger nail, as well as a ring. This ring has her name in runes, and is the symbol of her magical girl contract. As a magical girl, Kyouko's outfit is a fair bit more elaborate. The Soul Gem sits at the center of her chest, and she carries a massive spear that she can split into sections and use like a chain whip. ▶ AURAL: Sub voice, dub. I typically imagine Kyouko's sub voice when writing her. She speaks Japanese as a default, though obviously in games that changes. She will almost always refer to people using "you" or some insulting term (think of it as a rude hey, you! in English), and for characters that speak Japanese, she sounds like a little punk. Very impolite, informal Japanese. Does not use honorifics. ▶ OLFACTORY: Whatever she's eating at the time, tbh. Most often chocolate (from pocky) or something sweet-smelling. ▶ DEMEANOR: Kyouko is rude. That's the long and short of it. Most first meetings will be unpleasant, with her being either obnoxiously aggressive or cold and standoffish. She will call you names. She might start a fight with you. If she perceives you as weak, she will point this out. She is brusque and disrespectful. She won't be your friend and in network correspondences will probably hang up on you if she's tired of talking to you or just walk away. If you somehow manage to breach past this horrible first impression, she will probably turn you off by being selfish and ruder. If you are nice enough to surpass this, she will be gruff but a lot easier to get along with. If you actually last this long she might display begrudging affection. Children have a higher chance of getting on her good side, and very sweet people like Madoka. Those too far on the lawfully good end of things, naive do-gooding heroes, and uptight and overly polite people will piss her off. People who are quiet and leave her to her own devices (Homura) are generally okay first impression-wise. ✝ IC Permissions. ▶ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: No. Is the short answer. The long answer is, she will push you away. She doesn't like being touched/hugged/kissed, none of that. She is a habitual invader of public space, but if she doesn't know you and you get anywhere near her, she will respond negatively. ▶ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Is fine! She's good in a fight, but violence will be met with violence, and she is a magical powerhouse. ▶ PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: She doesn't have much resistance to this, though she may know when someone is poking around in her head. There's a buttload of awful memories in her psyche though, so just lemme know in advance if some psychic stuff is going on so I can figure out what would be seen by your psychic. ▶ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Kyouko is, as mentioned, a magical powerhouse! She is noted to be very magically powerful, and had the willpower to adjust the nature of her magical abilities. She is outclassed by Mami Tomoe magical power wise, but she's still nothing to sneeze at. I rank her somewhere above Sayaka and Homura, though this is dependent on canonpoint for Homura. She is able to transform her Soul Gem into various items, and has been shown creating shields to block off areas. She is also a pretty skilled physical combatant, able to fight both melee and long-range. She can leap over buildings in a single bound, all that good stuff. As a magical girl, Kyouko can withstand pain far beyond that of a normal human being. She is very resilient, and functionally immortal as long as her Soul Gem is not damaged or tainted by Grief (which is a thing that happens a lot, so). If her Soul Gem takes on too much strain, she will transform into the witch Ophelia, complete with psychedelic paper-mache barrier. The Law of Cycles in canon changes this so that she will simply disappear. Obviously the witch thing still applies in games! ▶ MEDICAL INFORMATION: She's healthy despite her habit of eating a ton, but she has a huge weakness in the form of her Soul Gem. If she is more than 100 meters away from this item, she will cease all life function until it's returned to her. If the Gem is shattered, she'll die instantly, and if overused it will collapse into a Grief Seed and turn her into a Witch. Other than that, she can take anything you throw at her. ▶ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Wasting food and throwing food away, especially food given freely out of the kindness of people's hearts is an enormous offense to her, and she will respond very, very badly to it. Related to this, I view her eating habits as an actual compulsion, so this may pop up in her inner thoughts here and there. On a lesser level, disrespect toward religious symbols (crosses, defacing churches, souls [thanks Kyuubey], etc.) will absolutely infuriate her. ✝ OOC Permissions. ▶ BACKTAGGING: I'll backtag up to about a month, but plot-relevant things and heavy character development things I'd like to talk through just so I can know how Kyouko grew (or didn't) from it. I'm really trying to work on my tagging speed so if it takes more than a few weeks to get back to me, I may drop your thread just to keep my inbox under control. If you ever are in doubt about backtagging, just ask me! I'm pretty flexible and we can always do another thread if things have gone on too long. Sometimes I will take a little while to tag you! However, if we are in a thread in-game and I have taken longer than a week and I'm not on a clear hiatus, please bug me. I mean it! It really helps me out a lot when any bad habits tagging-wise are pointed out to me, since I'm working on being more conscious about my thread dropping. ▶ THREADHOPPING: I am fine with it within reason. Private threads and more serious threads I'd prefer to avoid it in, but if you've ever got the burning desire to threadhop, just ping me with a [is this okay?] sort of OOC note first. ▶ FOURTHWALLING: No thanks! ▶ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: No triggers, but suicide, violence against and exploitation of children, violence against animals, sexual assault and topics dealing heavily in racial violence (such as hate crimes and so on) are subjects I would like to be warned about in advance.
